Adaptable living is the main inspiration behind Segment. Sugiyama believes that allowing individuals to customize and change their furnishings according to their lifestyle creates a stronger connection and awareness of their own furniture, resulting in a more comfortable and enjoyable living environment.

What sets Segment apart is its simple appearance and diverse functionality. The vase is divided into two portions that can be attached to create a wider and complete vase, or used separately as two smaller vases. When used separately, they can be hung on the wall, placed on a table or shelf, or even used as bookend holders or containers. With its versatility, Segment goes beyond being just a vase and interacts with the space in unexpected and playful ways.

The production of Segment involves using wood lathes by hand and applying a special coating paint with an airbrush. The design is first created using a 3D program to settle all the profiles, and then the instructions are followed to manufacture the vases. The specifications of Segment vary depending on the size: the small size vase measures H 90mm / W 105 mm / D 30mm, the medium size vase measures H 120mm / W 90mm / D 30mm, and the large size vase measures H 180mm / W 90mm / D 30mm.

Segment offers individuals the ability to choose from various playful functions based on their preferences. Whether it's hanging on the wall, placed on a table or shelf, or used as bookend holders or containers, this multifunctional vase adds a touch of creativity and personalization to any space.

The project for Segment began in early 2018 and was exhibited during the 'SaloneSatellite 2018 - Salone del Mobile Milano'. The design was driven by the goal of creating functional decorative items that enhance the environment with functionality, practicality, and aesthetics.

Creating Segment came with its own set of challenges. The design had to grab the viewers' attention and curiosity through its unique design, material usage, and finishing. Achieving the right balance and proportion for suitable aesthetics was also a challenging aspect. Manufacturing the wood lathes by hand required careful attention to attaching the curved portion with the extended back plate, ensuring a smooth and clean edge treatment on all edges. The special coating paint required meticulous refinement for the perfect finish.
